Subject Knowledge Enhancement courses

These courses are free and usually run for anything up to six months, offering a bursary of £200-£225 per week.

They are for candidates who have some physics background (generally a physics A-level or work experience) and they are designed to get you to a sufficient level of knowledge and confidence in your physics that you can begin Initial Teacher Education.

The courses include lectures, practical work, tutorials and self-study and cover the topics you would be teaching at secondary level. As well as the long SKEs, there are shorter ones (even two week courses) which your tutor may feel suit your particular situation.

Be aware of which institutions offer SKE when you apply for teacher training. To attend, you will need an offer of a place on an ITE scheme and have been asked to complete an SKE as a pre-condition for beginning your teacher training. Some universities without an SKE course will refer you to another institution for SKE.
